During the summer months, many children spend more time at home, which can lead to scenarios that might become dangerous.

Donna Bucciarelli, RN, trauma prevention coordinator, Beaumont Children’s, says, “Parents often pay careful attention to ‘baby proofing’ their home when their children begin to walk or crawl. However, they might not be as cautious after their child grows a little older. Older children can easily mistake medication as candy or open the door to a stranger. That’s why it’s critical for parents to walk around their home and identify and correct any potential safety issues.”

When you are walking through your home and looking for any potential hazards, watch out for the following:

Medication Safety

  • Keep medicine, cleaning supplies and chemicals locked away or out of reach. Put these items away immediately after each use.
  • Purchase over-the-counter and prescription medicines with childproof caps. Do not keep them on your bedside table.
  • Never use food containers to store nonfood substances.

Stranger Danger

  • Tell children not to open the door for anyone they do not recognize.
  • Think of the door as a safety barrier.
  • Children should pretend they aren’t home. Don’t peek out the window.
  • Call 911 if the person doesn’t go away.

Babysitters

  • Give yourself enough time to be selective.
  • Look for a babysitter within your circle of friends, church or community.
  • Look for someone who already works with children.
  • Always check references.

Emergency Contacts

  • Create an emergency contact list that includes names, work phone numbers and cell phone numbers.
  • Post your home address on the fridge with your emergency contact list. Then, if a babysitter needs to call 911, he or she will be able to read your address to the dispatcher.

Bug Bites

  • If a bug stings or bites a child, look for signs of an allergic reaction.
  • If anyone in the home has a known allergy, make sure your EpiPen is accessible.
  • Antihistamines can help reduce itching and swelling. Acetaminophen can relieve pain. Topical 1 percent hydrocortisone cream can soothe itching.
