122 children with special needs participated in Beaumont Children’s Bike Day this year.
For many children, it’s their first bicycle. The adaptive bikes can cost from $1,000 to $6,000. You won’t find these bikes at local bike shops or big box retailers. They come in all shapes and sizes. Some are pedaled by hand, some by foot. Bikes are modified or customized for each child.
Thanks to funding from organizations such as Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, each child receives a customized bike at no charge. Since its inception 12 years ago, more than 789 bikes have been distributed to families across Southeast Michigan.
