What is the Beaumont PATCH program?

Beaumont Children's PATCH is a pediatric palliative care program that provides comfort and support to children of all ages with life-limiting conditions. PATCH stands for Palliative Team and Children's Hospice. We serve those unborn through early adulthood. Our commitment is to provide compassionate and personalized care to children as well as practical and spiritual support to the entire family.

We focus on meeting the medical, spiritual, and emotional needs of the children and supporting everyone who cares for them. Our hope is that this will allow children and families to be families for as long as possible, making every moment together special.

The program includes:

Physical therapist for those children who may benefit from therapies that optimize function and reduce pain and distressing symptoms.
A chaplain who provides emotional, spiritual and bereavement support to your family.
A board-certified hospice and palliative medicine pediatrician who provides expert symptom management and coordinates care with your child's doctors.
Dietary guidance for your child (if needed).
Community education and support.

A pediatric registered nurse who provides regularly scheduled visits and on-call availability, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
A home health aide who provides assistance with your child’s personal care and activities of daily living.
A social worker who provides your entire family with counseling and support while assisting with community resources and memory making.
Volunteers who provide companionship to your child, which allows you time for yourself and your family.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if Beaumont's PATCH program is right for my child now?

For most childhood diseases and conditions, predicting the future is difficult. Our supportive services are most effective when started as soon as possible following the diagnosis. PATCH supports the entire family and focuses on helping your child live as well as possible for as long as possible.

Does this mean we have to give up hope on a cure for our child?

No. We will continue to hope with you and help your child remain comfortable, live each day to the fullest, create family memories, and when necessary, prepare for a peaceful death. For some children, we are able to continue treatments that focus on the underlying condition while they participate in the PATCH program.

I'm satisfied with the people caring for my child now. Will I have to change doctors?

No. We encourage all of your child's care providers to continue their support for your child and family. The PATCH team will partner with your child's doctor to coordinate care, always respecting your family's wishes.

My doctor is not familiar with Beaumont's PATCH program and is not sure that the services are appropriate for my child.

The PATCH program is staffed only by experienced pediatric professionals specializing in palliative and hospice care for children. We are always available to answer any questions you or your child's physician may have about the benefits of our program.

Payment Information

Beaumont's PATCH program will never refuse care to children and families who are unable to pay for services. We receive payments through private health insurance companies, Medicaid, Children's Special Health Care Services, individual payments, grants and generous donations.
