Beaumont Hospitals offer comprehensive breast care for all breast conditions. Our breast specialists are experts in diagnosing and treating breast conditions, from breast lumps to breast cancer to fibrocystic breast changes and beyond. To aid in providing the most accurate diagnoses, we use the most up to date breast imaging technology, including:

  • mammography
    • screening and diagnostic mammography
    • digital mammography
    • 3D mammography
    • 3D tomosynthesis
  • scintimammography
  • breast MRI
  • breast ultrasound
  • ultrasound-guided breast biopsy
  • 3D whole-breast ultrasound

3D tomosynthesis mammography

3D tomosynthesis systems (a form of three-dimensional mammogram) are available at Beaumont hospitals in Royal Oak, Grosse Pointe, and Troy and at the Beaumont Medical Center in West Bloomfield. Our goal is to have these systems available at all Beaumont hospitals and outpatient care centers in the near future so we can provide advanced screening opportunities for more women in locations convenient for them.

This advanced method of breast screening takes a series of images to create three-dimensional images that helps doctors accurately diagnose breast cancer. Studies show that this type of mammography can increase breast cancer detection rates by up to 40 percent.
Tomosynthesis can be used for all women, but it’s most useful for those who:

  • have a genetic mutation that puts them at high risk for developing breast cancer
  • have a family history of breast cancer
  • have dense breast tissue
  • are undergoing their first mammogram
