Corewell Health is the new name for Beaumont.

At the Vattikuti Digital Breast Diagnostic Center (VDBDC), we offer state-of-the-art digital equipment for breast screening and detection. Located at our Royal Oak Campus, the VDBDC features diagnostic support, including computer-aided detection (image checkers) and a computer program for double-reading mammograms to ensure accuracy. Electronic breast images are available and may be viewed by you and referring physicians.

The center has state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment including:

  • a fully-digitalized, mammography system
  • 3-Tesla MRI scanner
  • highly-skilled technologists
  • board certified radiologists, many of whom are fellowship trained in breast imaging

Because all of our screening mammograms are double read, we ensure the highest accuracy in interpretation. Patients coming to Beaumont, who present with lumps, are offered the same day ultrasound-guided cyst aspirations or core biopsies. Our waiting time for an additional procedure after a screening mammogram is kept below three days.

In conjunction with Beaumont's Comprehensive Breast Care Center (staffed by breast surgeons, oncologists and a primary care physician who specializes in benign breast disease), the VDBDC will participate in a new High Risk Evaluation Clinic. This program will identify women who are at high risk for breast cancer at the time of their screening mammogram. They will then be referred to a nurse navigator who will determine if the patients are candidates for genetic counseling, surgical consultation or other treatment options.

Research

The VDBDC houses the Division of Breast Imaging and Intervention at the Royal Oak campus. This division is an active participant in Beaumont Research. Our radiologists were the only group in Michigan to participate in the landmark DMIST trial which demonstrated a benefit of digital mammography compared to film for women who were pre- or perimenopausal or who had dense breast tissue. We are also involved in conducting projects related to the digitization of old film mammograms, as well as certain pathologies related to breast cancer.

The VDBDC is proud to be a part of the Beaumont's Comprehensive Breast Cancer Program, which, along with its Troy counterpart, has received the Breast Imaging Center of Excellence Certificate given by the American College of Radiology (ACR) for facilities who practice at the highest level.
