Beaumont Hospital, Trenton hosts 9th annual ‘Family Safety Awareness Day’ May 19

Hospital’s Trauma Department collaborates with public safety departments to prevent injury and teach ‘Stop the Bleed’ classes

Beaumont Hospital, Trenton, 5450 Fort St., is hosting its ninth annual “Family Safety Awareness Day” to educate the community about how to stay safe in their homes, communities and beyond.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 19.

Activities include adult health screenings, bicycle safety inspections (bring yours), bicycle obstacle course, child identification kits, face painting, fire safety obstacle course, gun safety simulator, helicopter tour (weather permitting), fire safety smokehouse, Stop the Bleed training, SWAT Bearcat tour and free bottled water, pizza and ice cream.

Free bicycle helmets will be available from 10 a.m. to noon, while supplies last.

At 10:30 a.m., Stop the Bleed training will be offered in the hospital’s Administration Module in rooms 159 and 167. Registration is required. To register, call Brandy: 734-642-2213. This national campaign launched in response to multiple mass casualty events and seeks to empower every bystander with the knowledge and confidence to help in a bleeding emergency. You will learn to recognize life-threatening bleeding and be taught how to apply direct pressure to a bleeding wound, use and apply a tourniquet, pack a wound and know what to do until EMS arrives. At noon, catch the demonstration given by the Flat Rock Police Department’s K-9 unit, including Officer Brian Tetreau and K-9 Zander.

At 1 p.m., see the “Jaws of Life” demonstration from the Woodhaven Fire Department.

Be sure to complete all the safety stations by 1:30 p.m. to qualify to enter the free bike contest. Donations from Beaumont, Trenton physicians make this contest possible.

Meet representatives of your local Department of Natural Resources, Downriver Dive Team, Downriver SWAT, fire departments, Lifeflight of Michigan, Michigan Search and Rescue, police departments, a railroad safety expert, Senior Alliance AAA 1-C and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

“It’s important for our community members to learn how to keep themselves and their families safe. We also want them to know our first responders and what community resources are available when needed,” said Barbie Loreto, RN, trauma injury prevention coordinator, Beaumont, Trenton. “We want to show how Beaumont Hospital, Trenton works with first responders and other agencies to help keep our campus safe and secure for them.”
