How to dispose of expired or unused medication

Best option: take your medication to a drug take back location. Many police departments and pharmacies are drug take back locations. Below are some helpful links to find locations or call your local police department.

Medicine Disposal

If there are no drug take back locations in your area, use the following instructions to dispose of medications in your trash:

  • Mix medications (liquid or pills) with an unpleasant substance such as dirt, cat litter, or used coffee grounds
  • If liquid, place in a container such as a sealed plastic bag
    • Throw away the container in your trash at home
  • Remove all personal information on the prescription label of empty medicine packaging, then trash or recycle the container
