How long does will it be before my surgery?

The timeline typically depends on your individual insurance plan. At your consultation appointment we’ll review requirements from your insurance company. Some patients can get to surgery as soon as six weeks after consultation. Other insurances require a full calendar year workup.

What tests will I need before surgery?

We’ll discuss with you both tests needed for your insurance, as well as any medical testing. Insurance-specific testing often includes dietary evaluation and psychological evaluation. Medical testing may include lab work, radiological testing, endoscopy procedures and other cardiac or specialty clearances. Most testing can be done on/near the Beaumont Hospital, Trenton campus.

How long will I be in the hospital?

All patients stay at least one night in the hospital.

How much time will I need to take off work?

This depends on the type of work that you do. If you constantly walk, lift, push/pull for work, you will be advised to take six weeks off from work. If you work a “desk job,” you can be back to work in 10-14 days.

What will my diet be after surgery?

You will complete six weeks of “healing diets,” moving through clear liquids, full liquids, pureed foods and soft foods. These diets are designed to allow your GI system to fully heal following surgery. After this, we recommend focusing on lean proteins, non-starchy vegetables, whole grains and fruits. We want you to be able to eat meals with your family and enjoy birthday cake (just in smaller portions).

How often will I have follow up appointments?

We want to see you, at minimum, two weeks, six weeks, three months, six months and one year after surgery. Every time you see the surgeon, you have the opportunity to speak with the dietitian, as well.

How much weight will I lose?

Patients who undergo bariatric surgery typically have a BMI of 40 kg/m2, which is about 100 lbs. of excess weight. The average weight loss for a sleeve gastrectomy is 60-70% of excess weight (60-70 lbs.) and the average weight loss for a gastric bypass is 60-80% of excess weight (60-80 lbs.). Bariatric surgery should be a tool to assist you with losing weight. Your individual commitment to dietary, exercise and lifestyle modifications greatly impacts your weight loss after surgery.

Will I need plastic surgery?

This is very patient-specific. We can provide you with referrals to plastic surgery upon request. Typically, if elected, patients will wait at least one to two years after surgery, when their weight has stabilized.
