Many common infections can be treated by your personal physician.  But if your doctor finds an infection that is difficult to diagnose or manage, they may refer you for more extensive evaluation.  

The  Infectious Disease  specialists are skilled in providing special insight and understanding of complicated infections, including those caused by bacteria, viruses, and fungi.  As subspecialists in Internal Medicine, they have additional training in immunology (how the body fights infection), epidemiology (how infections spread), and they possess a particular insight into the use of antibiotics and best methods for controlling and treating infections.
