Kowalenko president-elect of American Board of Emergency Medicine

Terry Kowalenko, M.D., chairman of Emergency Medicine of Beaumont hospitals in Royal Oak, Troy and Grosse Pointe and president of the Beaumont Medical Group, has been elected president-elect of the American Board of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Kowalenko has been a member of the ABEM board of directors since July 2010, and was elected to the Executive Committee in 2014.

American College of Osteopathic Surgeons recognizes Gardner

Preston Gardner, D.O., fellow, Plastic Surgery at Beaumont Hospital, Farmington Hills, recently won first prize for his presentation, “Institutional Review of Surgeon Based Indications and Preoperative Employment of Percutaneous Biopsies Before Radiologic-Localized Breast Mass Excisional Biopsy/Lumpectomy.” The prize was presented to the Wixom resident by the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons.

Children’s Leukemia Foundation of Michigan honors Gowans with award

L. Kate Gowans, M.D., chief, Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, Beaumont Children’s, was honored by the Children’s Leukemia Foundation of Michigan with their “Medical Innovator Award.” The Rochester resident was chosen for her medical expertise, kindness, generous spirit and community involvement that inspire others.

Townsel recipient of AHA’s Health Ambassador of the Year

DiAne Townsel, cancer community health educator, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak is the recipient of the “2016 Health Ambassador of the Year Award” from the American Heart Association, Southeast Michigan Chapter. The award was given for her work in furthering the mission of the AHA and its “Power to End Stroke” campaign in Southeast Michigan.

Soto appointed to Michigan Prescription Drug and Opioid Abuse Commission

Gov. Rick Snyder announced his initial appointments to the Michigan Prescription Drug and Opioid Abuse Commission. Roy Soto, M.D., a Beaumont Health anesthesiologist and a professor at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine was named to serve on the 21-member Commission. The Bloomfield Hills resident will represent Michigan medical schools.

Carlisi named to state board of directors for volunteer resource organization

The Michigan Healthcare Volunteer Resource Professionals announced the appointment of Nancy Carlisi as the Professional Development Chair to its state board of directors. Carlisi is the director of Volunteer Services at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. She will serve on the MHVRP board through 2017.
