High Risk Pregnancy Doctors at Beaumont

A high-risk pregnancy doctor is an OB-GYN who has been fellowship trained in identifying, co-managing and caring for high-risk pregnancies. This doctor will collaborate with your private physician, midwife and specialists to care for you and your baby throughout the spectrum of possible pregnancy complications.

The overarching goal of a high-risk pregnancy doctor, or maternal-fetal medicine specialist (MFM), is a safe outcome for both a mother and her baby. Health risks often challenge this goal, but OB-GYNs and MFMs work with you to identify and reduce risk.

Roles of a High Risk Pregnancy Doctor

If you are concerned about high-risk pregnancy, your primary care physician or OB-GYN may refer you to a Beaumont MFM specialist. High-risk pregnancy doctors play three key roles in managing high-risk pregnancy:

  1. Consultation only: Your doctor may refer you to an MFM specialist for a one-time consultation to help create a plan of care before and during your pregnancy.
  2. Co-managed care: You'll continue to see your OB-GYN for prenatal care; in addition, you'll see your MFM for diagnosis, treatment and/or observation of a specific condition that may put your or your baby at risk. Most of Beaumont's MFM patients fall within this co-managed care category.
  3. Full-care transfer: A women and her OB-GYN may decide the pregnancy is best managed by the MFM. In this case, the MFM will share information with the OB-GYN, then transfer the patient's care back to that doctor after the baby is delivered.

Beaumont’s high risk pregnancy doctors are obstetrician-gynecologists who have undergone an additional two to three years of specialized training in the assessment and management of high-risk pregnancies throughout pregnancy, labor and delivery and postpartum. The team also includes genetic counselors, dietitians, social workers, nurse specialists and pediatric subspecialists.

Within the Beaumont network, patients also have access to three state certified neonatal intensive care units and a team of pediatric specialists if your baby needs additional care after delivery.
