Bariplastic Surgery

Bariplastic surgery (body contouring) can play an important part in returning a patient to their desired physical condition. Body contouring, following bariatric surgery, eliminates excess skin that many are left with post-surgery.

While weight loss surgery can have a dramatic improvement on the patient's overall health, increase the person's ability to be active, and decrease the need for medication; excess skin, rashes and scars can still remain.

This procedure can have positive affects on the patient, including:

  • renewed self confidence
  • better looking figure
  • restoring overall function and form

Body Contouring Procedures Offered

Panniculectomy

A panniculectomy is the most common procedure done after massive weight loss. It involves removal of the extra skin and fat from the lower abdomen. The removal of the extra skin and fat has a positive affect on the patient, including improvement in lower back discomfort and the elimination of a recurring rash underneath the excess skin.

Beaumont doctors are able to close an incision in a way that reduces scarring. The operation is performed under a general anesthetic and usually requires 1-2 hours. Insurance carriers may provide coverage for this operation if there is documentation of need.

Abdominoplasty

An abdominoplasty, more commonly referred to as a tummy tuck, involves the elevation of the skin and fatty tissue up to the ribs as well as the internal tightening of the abdominal wall. The surgery typically requires about 3 hours. This additional component is considered cosmetic and not covered by insurance carriers.

As with all surgeries, complications are possible for both a panniculectomy and an abdominoplasty. Patients with higher BMI (Body Mass Index) generally are at a slightly higher risk for complications then lighter patients. A full recovery back to normal activity typically requires 6-8 weeks.

Beaumont also offers a variety of other bariplastic procedures including:

  • thigh lift
  • circumferential body lift
  • breast lift
  • arm lift
  • neck and/or face lift
  • liposuction, ultrasonic, tumescent fluid and traditional
  • implants and fat injections
