Healthy living is about more than a number

Being overweight at any age means more than a number on a scale or what size clothes you wear. In fact, weighing more than what is considered healthy can put you at greater risk of developing several serious conditions, including:
  • diabetes
  • heart disease
  • high blood pressure
  • many types of cancer
  • high cholesterol
  • joint problems

And the younger you are when you become overweight, the earlier these diseases can start.

What you can do to control your kid's weight

By joining the Beaumont Healthy Kids Program, you and your child will learn behaviors to promote and improve lifelong health. This Beaumont Children’s Hospital program pairs you with a proven, multidisciplinary weight management team that creates strategies to benefit the entire family.

By helping young patients adopt a healthier lifestyle, this weight control program for kids has been proven in studies to improve the participant’s daily diet, increase his or her physical activity level and significantly decrease body mass index, or BMI, in the majority of children who complete the program.

Elements of the weight control program for kids

The 12-session weight control program for kids is for children ages 3 to 18. You and your child will meet four times each with:

  • a registered
dietitian who provides education on nutrition in relation to health and counseling on incorporating a more healthful diet into each family’s lifestyle
  • a psychologist who provides behavioral change strategies, identifies emotional and behavioral disorders, coaches and motivates families to make positive changes and provides counseling on weight control issues for kids that may interfere with progress
  • an exercise physiologist who assesses current physical activity level, promotes physical activity in ways that are appealing to children and families and provides instruction on proper exercise techniques to prevent injury and maximize health benefit

In addition, you can participate in free Beaumont Healthy Family events and activities, including cooking classes, parenting programs and exercise activities.

Certain insurance plans cover the Beaumont Healthy Kids Program. Contact your insurance provider to see if your plan covers the program. Different levels of financial aid are available for those meeting financial need criteria.
