Join Raluca Lowe, M.D., Tuesday, Aug. 9 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. as she launches Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe’s first Walk with a Doc event, “Pre-Diabetes” at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House.

During this free, wellness program, Dr. Lowe will provide a brief overview of the signs and symptoms of pre-diabetes before leading participants on a 45-minute walk around the estate.

The morning begins with check-in and blood pressure exams between 10:30 and 11 a.m., followed by Dr. Lowe’s overview between 11 and 11:30 a.m. and a doctor-lead walk from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Participants can expect views of Lake St. Clair and the picturesque gardens which emboss the grounds.

“When patients find out early about their pre-diabetes condition, which is often symptom-free, they have a great opportunity to improve their health,” Dr. Lowe said. “Without intervention, however, individuals can develop Type 2 diabetes within two years or less.”

With healthy lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a healthy weight and increasing activity levels, individuals might be able to bring their blood sugar to normal levels,” Dr. Lowe said.

“This is a great opportunity for people to get out and get educated,” said Dr. Lowe, who will offer simple tips on reversing the trend. “It also gives us a chance to practice what we preach: moderate, daily exercise.”

Maria Miller, controller for Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe, said she hopes the program helps the community see the hospital as its partner in wellness.

“We’re excited to launch Walk with a Doc at the Eleanor and Edsel Ford house,” said Miller, adding that the program will feature two additional meetings in September and October, and three next spring.

The next Walk with a Doc Event, “Women and Hormones,” is scheduled for Sept. 13 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with Michael Brennan, M.D.

“It’s an ideal partnership: The Ford house provides the beauty, serenity and infrastructure and we provide the expertise and information,” Miller said. “After meeting and listening to our expert, participants will enjoy almost two miles of walking trails.”

Space is limited to 50 participants and free, Walk with a Doc events take place rain or shine. Register online or by calling 800-633-7377.

The Cotswold Café will be open for lunch afterwards. Call 313-453-2037 for reservations.
