Beaumont Hospital, Farmington Hills welcomes all to attend its free “Walk with a Doc” program from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18. Jennifer Beal, D.O., a Beaumont physician specializing in geriatric medicine, will discuss the causes, treatments and prevention of balance issues in older adults. Maintaining good balance is important to help older adults get around, stay independent and carry out daily activities.
Dr. Beal will also talk about how gerontologists, who work at the Senior Assessment Center within Botsford Commons Senior Community, assess balance in older adults. They also assess older adults for other physical, diagnostic, psychological and social issues to develop a comprehensive evaluation that includes recommendations.
“People are more likely to have problems with balance as they get older,” said Dr. Beal. “There are many potential causes of impaired balance, so it’s important to be evaluated by a physician. By making certain changes, a person can help reduce his or her risk for falling and improve their balance.”
Walk with a Doc will be held at the Heritage Park Nature Center in Farmington Hills. The park is on the west side of Farmington Road between 10 and 11 Mile Roads. The event will be held rain or shine. For more information, call Caroline Schairer, Walk with a Doc coordinator, Beaumont Hospital, Farmington Hills, at 248-442-1661.
