May is Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month.
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. One in five Americans of all colors and races will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. It can almost always be cured when it’s found and treated early.
Get a free skin cancer screening at an event being held from 1-4 p.m., on Saturday, May 20, at Beaumont Cancer Center, 27900 Grand River, Farmington Hills. There are a limited number of appointments; call 248-471-8120 to register. Beaumont dermatologists Annette LaCasse, D.O., and Michael Mahon, D.O., along with their team of dermatology residents will perform the screenings.
Join Beaumont in taking action to prevent skin cancer. Please remember to:
- Stay out of the sun as much as possible between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Use sunscreen. SPF 15 sunscreen blocks 93 percent of UVB radiation, while SPF 30 sunscreen blocks nearly 97 percent. Reapply every two hours and after you swim or perspire.
- Cover up with long sleeves and a hat.
- Check your skin regularly for changes.
