More than 30 million people live with diabetes every day. Many have learned how to live with it. But, the diagnosis can be overwhelming, even if you’ve done all the research. Knowing which healthy lifestyle changes to make can help you manage the disease.
On Nov. 9, Beaumont Hospital, Troy, will host an event, “Living Well: Preventing and Managing Diabetes” from 6-8 p.m. in the Qazi Auditorium within the Moceri Learning Center located at 44201 Dequindre in Troy, MI.
“Our patients have many questions about diabetes. This event is a great way to support our community and share knowledge that will assist our patients and families to take an active role in their health and wellness,” Beaumont, Troy, President Nancy Susick, RN, said.
WDIV-TV 4 weather anchor Brandon Roux will emcee the free event which will provide information about how to take control of diabetes and help loved ones, too. It begins with a health fair that includes:
- pharmacists with information about medications
- diabetes friendly food and refreshments
- free blood pressure screenings
- integrative medicine experts
- stroke education and awareness
- CPR education and training
After the interactive health fair, Brandon Roux will share his personal story about living with diabetes. Then, Beaumont endocrinologist Abdul Al-Kassab, M.D., will present key ideas about diabetes to help you better understand the disease. Lordeen Kordel Card, a Beaumont registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator, will share ideas about preparing healthier meals. And, Lori Lackman-Zeman, Ph.D., a health psychologist, will discuss stress management, healthy behavior changes and the link between diabetes and depression. The evening ends with a panel discussion.
Throughout the night, there will be drawings for prizes including: The Heart-Healthy Handbook, 7 for $70 screenings, Sola Life & Fitness passes and integrative medicine massages.
Attendees will also receive information about how to download a cookbook filled with diabetes-friendly recipes approved by Beaumont dietitians.
