If you’re looking for motivation to lead a healthier lifestyle, join Sonya Friedman, Ph.D. Monday Aug. 15, at the Troy Community Center as part of the Beaumont Guiding Hearts cardiac support group. Dr. Friedman will share her knowledge on protecting the heart and maintaining an active lifestyle. Guiding Hearts is a patient-led support group that offers education and support for adult cardiac patients.
“As we get older, genetics do not play as large a role in our health as they once did,” said Friedman, former host of CNN’s ‘Sonya Live.’ “We each need to be challenged with taking personal responsibility for our own health and well-being.”
“Beaumont is excited to present Dr. Friedman on the ‘well of aging,’” said Anne Davis, group facilitator and nurse clinician, preventive cardiology and rehabilitation, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. “Dr. Friedman’s ability to translate her knowledge and experience in psychology to everyday concerns and news events has made her one of the most recognized psychologists in the country. We expect to be inspired and motivated as she shares some of her insight on how to thrive, not just survive, through the aging process. All are welcome.”
Davis said this free event represents a joint effort between the cardiac support groups at Beaumont hospitals in Grosse Pointe, Royal Oak and Troy.
Research shows, Dr. Friedman explained, that exercise is the elixir of good health.
“Although many of us often say, ‘I can’t do it’, when it comes to taking care of ourselves, what we really mean is ‘I don’t want to do it,'” Friedman said. “What we want is for someone else to do it for us. We need to be honest with ourselves and say: ‘I’m not choosing to do this.’ Those of us who are willing to take care of ourselves are the most likely to have a healthy life.”
Friedman, who at 80 exercises five days a week, will also be promoting the power of positive thinking and the benefits of personal growth.
“We must all keep in mind ‘if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you always got,’” Friedman said. “If you want a different result, you need to do something differently.”
The “Well of Aging,” a free event featuring Sonya Friedman, Ph.D, takes place 6:30 to 8 p.m., Aug. 15, Room 304 at the Troy Community Center, 3179 Livernois Road, in Troy.
