Beaumont Health nursing residency program receives national accreditation

Beaumont Health’s nurse residency program has been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. It is currently one of two programs in the state to have achieved this high-level recognition and one of the largest CCNE-accredited programs in the country.

“I am so proud of the work that has been done by our nursing leaders to make this happen,” said Susan Grant, chief nursing officer. “This accreditation validates the rigor and educational content of our program, which helps new nurses successfully transition from being a student into nursing practice, while enhancing the overall nursing excellence at Beaumont.”

Beaumont’s nurse residency program enrolls all Beaumont nurses who graduated from a nursing program in the past 12 months. During their first year of practice, nurses focus on different areas, including enhancing critical thinking, quality, safety and more.

The current program was created in 2018 based on best practices of other programs around the country. It helps nurses transition from being students into the clinical setting, while improving retention of nurses within the first two years of their clinical practice as RNs.

“I am honored to be at the forefront of giving our nurses a voice in practice as we help them transition to the practice environment,” said Tonie Trevino, director, Nurse Residency Program. “I want them to know that it isn’t a journey they have to take alone, and it is one where, as a team, we can help them succeed. The CCNE accreditation status stands as a testament to our ongoing efforts and all of our hard work as an organization to provide resources for our newest nurses.”

The CCNE did a site visit in October and the program will maintain accreditation for five years.
