Early detection saves lives; Beaumont’s eight hospitals offer breast care services across Metro Detroit

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, Beaumont is hosting community events across Metro Detroit. The goal is to educate area women and their families about breast cancer with an emphasis on detection, wellness and nutrition.

“Early detection of breast cancer is vital. That’s where technology makes a big difference,” says Nayana Dekhne, M.D., corporate director, Breast Care Program, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. “Today’s advanced imaging technologies, including mammography, breast ultrasound, MRIs, along with digital breast tomosynthesis, are effective screening and diagnostic tools.”

Beaumont Health offers mammography services at 17 locations in Metro Detroit and digital breast tomosynthesis at six locations.

Digital breast tomosynthesis uses 3-D imaging technology. This state-of-the-art breast imaging is available at Beaumont’s Breast Care Centers in Farmington Hills, Grosse Pointe, Royal Oak, Trenton, Troy and West Bloomfield.

“The best way of finding breast cancer and affecting a cure is still with mammography,” said Murray Rebner, M.D., section head, Breast Imaging, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. “Women over 40 should get an annual screening mammography. Three out of four women who die from breast cancer have not had regular mammograms.”

For a mammogram at one of Beaumont Health’s 17 locations, women need to request a prescription from their physician and go to www.Beaumont.org/mammogram for more information.

“Information, genetic counseling and awareness are starting points for women who may be at risk for breast cancer,” said Majd Aburabia, M.D., breast cancer surgeon, Beaumont Hospital, Dearborn. “Genetic counseling and family health history assessments are very important tools to help women understand their likelihood for a breast cancer diagnosis and to effectively and realistically estimate their risk.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, after skin cancer, breast cancer is the second most common cancer found among American women. Each year, more than 200,000 U.S. women develop breast cancer and nearly 40,000 die. Behind lung cancer, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women in the U.S.

To raise awareness, Beaumont is presenting community breast cancer education programs throughout October:

Breast Health Fairs

Sharing and Caring, a patient-driven, volunteer network devoted to supporting breast cancer survivors, is hosting three Breast Health Fairs. The fairs, all open to the public, will take place at the Beaumont hospitals in Royal Oak, Grosse Pointe and Troy during October. A breast care expert will be at each site to answer questions. Added Dr. Aburabia, “Another thing about breast cancer prevention most women don’t know is studies show regular exercise lowers the risk for breast cancer. Furthermore, low alcohol intake is associated with a lower risk for breast cancer. Obesity is associated with an increased risk for breast cancer. These are modifiable risk factors women can control and influence through lifestyle modifications
