Beaumont Health names Susan Grant as chief nursing officer

Monday, November 02, 2015

Beaumont Health President and CEO John T. Fox has announced the appointment of Susan Grant, RN, as executive vice president and chief nursing officer for Beaumont Health.

In this position, Grant will be responsible for the direction of nursing practice for the more than 10,000 nurses across Beaumont Health. As the senior executive for nursing reporting directly to Beaumont Health’s CEO, she will be a member of the executive team ensuring that patient care and nursing practice are always at the forefront in decisions.

“Susan is an extraordinary nursing leader with talent that is well known and sought after across the country,“ says Fox. “Her commitment and expertise in patient and family-centered care will help guide us in achieving our mission of providing extraordinary, compassionate care for patients served in our hospitals, outpatient sites, clinics and other patient care locations.”

Grant comes to Beaumont Health from Emory Healthcare in Atlanta where she has served as chief nurse executive and chief patient services officer since 2006. At Emory, she was responsible for the nursing practice for about 5,000 nurses across six hospitals and multiple clinic locations.

Under her leadership, Emory University Hospital achieved its first Magnet designation, and Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital achieved its fifth designation. Grant is passionate about patient- and family-centered care and co-led the creation and implementation of the Emory Healthcare Care Transformation Model, the organization’s vision on how to deliver ideal care to patients and their families. She launched a systemwide Patient Family Advisor program, which provides a structured way for patients and their family members to provide valuable input in making decisions on quality, policies, facility designs and other programs that impact patients.

Grant also served as the system executive leader managing the successful admissions and communications related to the first two patients with Ebola virus disease treated in the United States. In addition, she served as interim dean of the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing at Emory University and associate dean for clinical leadership.

Prior to joining Emory, Grant was chief nursing officer and senior associate administrator for Patient Care Services at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle and chief of Nursing and Patient Care Services at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. Earlier in her career, she worked in South Carolina as a psychiatric liaison case manager at the Medical University of South Carolina and a nursing supervisor and director of Nursing Education at Kershaw County Hospital. She began her career as a staff nurse at Emory University Hospital and the Medical College of Georgia.

Grant earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the Medical College of Georgia; a master’s in psychiatric and community mental health nursing at the University of South Carolina; completed a year-long Managing Healthcare Delivery course at the Harvard Business School; and is working on her doctorate in nursing practice at Vanderbilt University. She was a Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellow and a Wharton Nursing Executive Fellow who has won many national awards and recognitions and served on numerous state and national committees on nursing practices.

Grant will join Beaumont Health in December.
