Mt. Holly Ski and Snowboard Resort in Holly has received 100 snow sports helmets for use by participants in their School Ski Days program thanks to a donation from Beaumont Children’s and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

As a result, the daily rental fee for helmets for area students participating in Mt. Holly’s weekday School Ski Days program will be waived.

“We’re grateful for this gift,” said Pam Deibel, director, Mt. Holly Ski School and coordinator of the School Ski Days program. “All School Ski Days participants will now be provided with a helmet at no cost to use during their ski program at Mt. Holly.”

Medical research has shown helmet use in snow sports can reduce the incidence of head injury by up to 60 percent. Canadian researchers have found skiers’ risk of head injury fell by 35 percent with helmet use.

“Traumatic head injury is the leading cause of death and serious injury in snow sports, including skiing and snowboarding,” explained Rebbeca Grysiewicz, D.O., medical director, Concussion Clinic, Beaumont Hospital – Royal Oak. “In fact, concussions account for about half of U.S. winter sports injuries. There’s plenty of evidence helmets
can prevent injuries on the slopes.”

Donna Bucciarelli, RN, Beaumont trauma prevention coordinator, and Erica Surman, RN, Beaumont pediatric trauma coordinator, received funds to purchase the School Ski Days helmets from Beaumont Children’s and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Back in 2013, they coordinated a similar donation of 100 helmets to Pine Knob Ski and Snowboard Resort near Clarkston.

“Our message is simple: Beaumont encourages the use of helmets. All snowboarders and skiers, regardless of age, should wear a properly-fitted, sports-specific helmet,” added Dr. Grysiewicz.
