A form of three-dimensional mammogram, tomosynthesis systems are currently available at Beaumont hospitals in Royal Oak, Grosse Pointe and Troy and at the Beaumont Medical Center in West Bloomfield. The goal is to expand their presence to all Beaumont hospitals and outpatient care centers, providing the opportunity for advanced screenings to more women than ever before.
This advanced method of breast screening uses a series of images from different angles to create a three-dimensional image that aids physicians in the diagnosis of breast cancer. Research has shown that the use of tomosynthesis increases cancer detection rates by as much as 40 percent.
While all patients can benefit from tomosynthesis, it is particularly useful for:
- individuals with a genetic predisposition to breast cancer
- those with a family history of breast cancer
- women who have dense breast tissue
- women undergoing a mammogram for the first time
Support from those in our community has been instrumental in our ability to acquire this technology and will continue to play an important role in making it more readily available at additional Beaumont locations.
