Acid Reflux - A Cause for ConcernUsually, acid reflux is easily treated and controlled with medication. But about 10 percent of acid reflux patients develop a precancerous condition (Barrett’s esophagus) or esophageal cancer.
Barrett’s esophagus – With repeated exposure to acid, the lining of the esophagus wears away and grows back with cells that show precancerous changes. The condition affects more than three million people over the age of 50 in the U.S. It is treatable with a technology known as BARRX.
Esophageal cancer prevention – The cancer with the fastest rising incidence rate, esophageal cancer is diagnosed in about 16,500 Americans each year and accounts for about 14,500 U.S. cancer deaths annually.
