With the iconic “Spirit of Detroit” statue in the background wearing a giant, blue T-shirt, Beaumont urologist, Michael Lutz, M.D., kicked-off “Men’s Health Week” with a “Blue Monday” news conference.

Unfortunately, most men don’t seek out medical attention when they should.

“If my wife didn’t push me, I probably wouldn’t go to the doctor,”  explained former Detroit Lion, Lomas Brown.

“Today is symbolic of men’s health,” said Dr. Lutz, who along with the Michigan Institute of Urology Men’s Health Foundation organizes the upcoming Father’s Day run at the Detroit Zoo. “Men’s health is about the health of the family.”

The event’s theme encourages men and their sons to begin the conversation about health issues, including prostate cancer.

Baseball great and former Cincinnati Red, Ken Griffey Sr., talked about the importance of men speaking up when they have health concerns. The 10-year prostate cancer survivor said, “Don’t stay silent, talk to a doctor today about how you’re feeling.”

A representative from the Detroit Tigers announced that all Major League Baseball teams will wear some blue on Father’s Day in support of men’s health.

Beaumont Health is a premier sponsor of  “Blue Monday” and “Men’s Health Week.”

Kenneth Peters, M.D., chief, Urology, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, spoke at the event and praised Dr. Lutz for his efforts, “His passion is infectious, promoting men's health engagement, education and advocacy. He’s working to create this awareness beyond the city of Detroit and state of Michigan. We’re pleased to support all his initiatives, including the upcoming Run for the Ribbon June 19 and the massive Men’s Health Event screening at Ford Field on Sept. 24.”
